This custom-designed oil painting was inspired by the rugged beauty of the Wolf Hill Forest Preserve in Smithfield, Rhode Island. The preserve is known for its winding rocky trails that lead deep into the woods before opening to distant views of the Providence skyline. Beloved by hikers, dog walkers, and nature enthusiasts, Wolf Hill is both peaceful and historically significant. In August of 1943, a U.S. Army Air Corps plane suffered engine failure and crashed on the summit, claiming the lives of three young servicemen. A memorial now rests beside the large boulder where the aircraft came to a stop.
The Challenge
This painting was commissioned by a man who lives beside the preserve. Before beginning the work, I spent time walking the trails and photographing the landscape from every angle. As I ventured deeper into the forest, I realized there was no single viewpoint that captured the true spirit of Wolf Hill. Its beauty lives in fragments — the moss-covered stones, the shifting light through the trees, the winding paths, and the quiet atmosphere of the woods. Capturing that essence in one image became the central challenge of the painting.
Rather than reproduce a literal scene, I chose to construct the composition entirely from my own reference photographs and experiences within the preserve. Every tree, rock, trail, and fallen leaf depicted in the painting exists somewhere within Wolf Hill, though not exactly as seen here. The final composition became an interpretation of the preserve — a memory-like portrait assembled from many moments gathered along the trail.
My Solution
The composition leads the viewer along a sunlit path that rises gently through the center of the painting, framed by weathered teal-gray boulders and rich autumn foliage. A stone wall runs quietly along the right side of the trail, guiding the eye deeper into the landscape. Beyond the foreground, the woods dissolve into soft layers of light, leaves, and distant silhouettes of trees and rock formations, creating an atmosphere that feels both intimate and expansive.
The painting was carefully designed to draw the viewer inward and create the sensation of walking the trail itself. The bend in the path — disappearing just beyond sight — became symbolic to me. It reflects the uncertainty of life: we cannot always see what lies ahead, yet we continue forward with faith, curiosity, and trust. The filtered light moving through the forest offers a quiet sense of peace and reassurance along the journey.
The finished painting was warmly received by the collector who commissioned it, and it now hangs in his living room as a personal tribute to the landscape just beyond his doorstep.
