Sunlight Painting in Fakes and Forgeries Exhibit by Artist Charles C. Clear III

Sunlight Painting in Fakes and Forgeries Exhibit
30″ x 17″, Pastiche, after Frank Weston Benson
by Charles C. Clear III

Spring Bull Art Gallery on Bellevue Avenue in beautiful Newport, Rhode Island had their 32nd Annual “Fakes and Forgeries” exhibit run from January 14th to February 26th, 2023. It’s a very popular exhibit where Artists are asked to paint a forgery of a famous painting.

This was the fourth year that I participated in the Show. My entry was a 30″ x 17″ oil painting that is a replica of the painting “Sunlight” by Frank Weston Benson, who was a famous Artist from Massachusetts.

I received word on January 23rd that my painting was awarded BEST IN SHOW! The juror, Artist Natalie Featherston, said about the piece “This is such a stunning painting- it literally lights up the gallery and one is drawn to it immediately. The color palette and paint handling are evocative of Benson’s pastel work, even though different mediums. The execution is top notch-beautiful and sensitive lines in the drawing capture the same gesture as the original.”

Big Thanks to juror Natalie Featherston and all of the good people at Spring Bull Art Gallery!
