This painting captures a tranquil view of Lake Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire — a scene I came to know well while staying on the property where it was painted.
Bonnie Lee Turner and I were in town to create a Fenway‑Park‑themed mural inside a sprawling luxury home. The homeowners generously invited us to stay next door in what they called their “cottage,” though it was a mansion in its own right. Both houses sat right on the lake, and every day the landscape felt like a gift. The mountains shifted color as the sun traveled across the sky, and no matter how many times you looked, the view had a way of stopping you in your tracks.
Just off the back steps of our cottage stood three white birch trees. In the early morning light they would glow — soft, luminous, almost otherworldly. We passed them each day on our walk to the mural site, and I found myself studying the subtle colors woven into their bark: pale violets, warm ochres, cool blues. I photographed them constantly, but the camera never captured what the eye could see. Eventually I realized the only way to honor that moment was to paint it.
This painting of the lake and the three birches became a personal favorite, and it quickly found a home in a private collection in Wolfeboro — right back where the inspiration first struck.
