Black Point Seascape Painting

Black Point is a gorgeous stretch of rocky coast in Narragansett, Rhode Island. It’s located just north of the popular Scarborough State Beach, and it has 44 acres and 3500 feet of shoreline. Despite that, Black Point is easy to miss and often overlooked. Access is from a small gravel parking lot on Ocean Road. A narrow path leads you through a leafy tunnel of thick brush and woods that soon opens into a wondrous seaside panorama. Point Judith Light is in the distance to your right; down the coast to your left is Bass Rock; and across the Bay is Beavertail and Newport.
The real beauty, though, is right at your feet: Massive slabs of granite and giant rocky outcroppings surround you in a surreal world of color, form, light, and texture; the rich, vibrant earth tones sizzle and glisten in the hot afternoon sun. Along the ridge a lush blanket of green is peppered with purple brush and yellow flowers, while overhead whispers of soft white clouds rest quietly in a pastel blue sky. The sea is always rough, always raging at Black Point. There are a symphony of blues that rise and fall as waves snake their way to the shore, then smash against the weathered rocks and explode into big white water clouds of spray and foam that dance and hiss and then disappear.
Black Point has been my inspiration for many paintings. I have also done some plein air painting down by the water, including this painting from 2017.
