Beavertail State Park in Jamestown, Rhode Island is a breathtakingly beautiful stretch of coastline! Beavertail is located on the southernmost tip of a narrow island peninsula, and it it surrounded by Narragansett Bay. Newport, Rhode Island’s Ocean Drive Historic District – the one with all the huge mansions – lies just to the east. To the west is Narragansett, and parts of it are so close enough that you can clearly see the homes and cars on scenic Ocean Road!

The real beauty at Beavertail, though, is all around you! There are mammoth sun-drenched rocks and giant waves that seem to be perpetually breaking; The light is glorious and ever-changing; shadows rise and fall and reinvent themselves in the texture of the rocks; The colors burst from an infinite palette and you just want to stop and savor every one! That was my inspiration for this painting!

In this large square Painting, a giant wave rises from the deep; its blue-green glory capped with white, ready to crash like thunder in the shallows. In the foreground is a rich tapestry of craggy rocks. These orange tinged behemoths, scattered across the shore, contain pockets of water and white foam that hiss in defiance, then sigh and retreat back to the sea to become the next wave.

The southern coast of Rhode island – especially Beavertail – is one of my favorite subjects to paint. I’ve done a number of plein air paintings at Beavertail, including “Rainbow Rock“, “Rocky Coast“, “Tidal Pool“, and others.

My Beavertail State Park Painting was sold many years ago. Fine art prints and poster art reproductions of the original artwork  are available. Contact me for more information, and to discuss your specific needs.
